Disregard the dissertation word limit After a few years of marking dissertations, most supervisors can judge from the size and weight of a dissertation if it’s way longer or shorter than expected. Don’t lead yourself into believing that not making use of your 10,000 word limit and producing a much shorter dissertation is going to be welcomed, because it’s going to take less time to mark.
These limits and requirements are strictly observed by the Board of Graduate Studies and the Degree Committees and, unless approval to exceed the prescribed limit has been obtained beforehand (see: Extending the Word Limit below), a thesis that exceeds the limit may not be examined until its length complies with the prescribed limit.
At my uni you are penalised for going more than 10% over the word limit, but there is no penalty for going under (this may be different at your uni of course). Some people just have a very concise writing style. However, going much under the limit can mean that you haven't answered the question fully and therefore will not get as high a mark as.
Until the final manuscript of a thesis or dissertation is filed, the student must be enrolled in accordance with enrollment policy. Graduate students in the College who do not file the final manuscript within the 6-month time limit must enroll in 3 hours a semester until the thesis or dissertation is completed and filed.
The committee consists of 3-5 members, at least two of whom must be full-time faculty at the University of Baltimore; one of these must be the student’s dissertation adviser. Students should choose professionals and researchers who are able and willing to advise their dissertations. Committee members should hold terminal degrees.
Extension applications must be submitted before the student's time limit expires to allow time for faculty consideration and processing (which may take up to two weeks). Students who do not submit an extension request before their time limit expires may lose access to University facilities and may even be withdrawn from the University.
Time Limits for Graduate Degrees Master’s degree students will normally complete work within six calendar years after the students’ first graduate registration at Kent State University. Any credit being transferred for meeting degree requirements should also have been earned within the six-year period.
